A Winnipeg taxi driver sustained minor injuries after a midday carjacking in the Fort Richmond neighbourhood.

The 53-year-old man was helping a fare carry groceries into a home on Allegheny Drive on Tuesday afternoon when an intoxicated teenage girl got into the driver’s seat, a police news release said Wednesday.

The taxi driver confronted the teen and she put the cab in reverse, police said. As she began to drive away, the man got caught in the open door and was dragged to the ground, police said.

The man was taken to hospital, treated and released.

Officers in the area responded shortly after 2:30 p.m., and found the taxi nearby on Killarney Avenue, with the accused teen inside, police said.

She was arrested and faces four charges: robbery, operating a conveyance while impaired, driving without a valid licence and failing to comply with a demand for a breath sample.

The teen was released on an undertaking.
