DENVER (KDVR) — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said one person was killed in a shooting involving several deputies on Saturday evening.

Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said the Lone Tree Police Department got a call around 6:20 p.m. Saturday of a suicidal man in an apartment on Roosevelt Lane. Because the address is unincorporated, the sheriff’s office stepped in to respond.

“At some point, it’s believed that the subject fired at least one round inside of his apartment,” Weekly said in a video posted to social media Saturday night.

The gunshot warned deputies that the man inside was armed, and led to the deputies working to get the gun out of his hands.

“The Lone Tree Community Response Team officer continued to talk to the subject, trying to get him to de-escalate and calm down,” Weekly said.

After some back and forth, the man was convinced to come outside. Unfortunately, he didn’t leave the gun behind.

“At some point, the subject came downstairs with the firearm in his right hand and fired one additional round outside of the apartment,” Weekly said.

The sheriff said the suspect pointed a gun, which he described as a revolver, at deputies. Multiple deputies fired and hit the man after the revolver was pointed in their direction.

“Deputies then immediately rendered medical aid and called for an ambulance,” Weekly said Saturday.

No deputies or other residents were hurt, but the man died at the hospital. Weekly said it was an unfortunate situation, but one that he believes Douglas County law enforcement is equipped to handle.

“We had the right people here, the community response team officers,” Weekly said. “This is what they do, to deescalate situations.”

Weekly said the officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave while the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigates.
