Arctic League announces closure of the Big Book; meets goal for 22 consecutive years

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The closing bell rang, and the final name was signed into the ‘Big Book’ at the Arctic League on Friday, capping off another successful year of bringing joy to thousands in Chemung County.

Officers from the Elmira Police Department were dressed in full uniform on Friday, Dec. 20, to deliver the final donation to the Arctic League by representing the Police Benevolent Association.

Members of the PBA came together to donate and present the Arctic League with a donation of $2,500, helping the Arctic League surpass its $175,000 goal. The donation from the EPD PBA equals the largest contribution ever received from the PBA and is tradition for the PBA to be the last signature in the book every year.

The 2024 Christman Campaign hit a total of $189,767.64 or 108.43% of the set goal. The Arctic League added that any additional donations will be used for the 2025 Christmas Campaign.

Officials with the Arctic League said volunteers are needed on Christmas Eve Day, Dec. 24, to help deliver packages to families around the county. Starting at 9 a.m. cars can begin staging on College Avenue and 2nd Street heading north.

Cars will follow to the Arctic League where the packages will be loaded into volunteer vehicles, police and Arctic League Staff will be available for assistance with directions. Officials said that Gifts to outlying areas in Chemung County will be delivered by volunteer fire departments. Those volunteering are welcome to a hot breakfast at the American Legion on Lake Street in Elmira after deliveries are done.

Anyone still needing holiday gifts in 2024 can contact the Arctic League and turn in an application no later than Monday, Dec. 23 by 10 a.m.
