Routes across Colorado’s Eastern Plains remained closed Saturday morning after a formidable winter storm dropped multiple feet of snow on the state.
While Denver freeways and all of Interstate 25 had reopened as of 10:45 a.m., Interstate 70 remains closed east of E-470, along with numerous state and federal highways east of I-25.
Rural counties were among the areas hardest hit by the storm — in Lincoln County, search-and-rescue operations were ongoing Saturday morning, with multiple rescuers and motorists stranded.
Capt. Michael Yowell of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office warned drivers to respect highway closures and not endanger themselves and others by taking their chances on county roads.
“When you come to a road closure gate, that’s bad getting worse,” he said. “Don’t try to beat it.”
A hazardous weather outlook remains in effect for northeast and north-central Colorado, with the National Weather Service urging caution among drivers and advising them to respect ongoing road closures.
