(KRON) – Parking too close to the crosswalk can become pricey for San Francisco drivers.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is complying with the California “Daylighting Law” (Assembly Bill 413) that went into effect in early 2024. Beginning the first day of the year in 2025, SFMTA will begin citing offenders. The fines are set to begin at $40.
As of Nov. 11, the SFMTA announced the department will begin issuing written warnings for vehicles parked within 20 feet of any crosswalk in the direction of approaching traffic.
The SFMTA specifies that this law applies to all crosswalks, “painted or not.”
“If the curb is not painted red, park at least 20 feet – about one car length – away from any marked or unmarked crosswalk,” said the SFMTA. “If the curb is painted red, the established restrictions apply. To avoid a citation, ensure your vehicle is not in the painted section of that curb.”
Safety of pedestrians and cohesive driving, the SFTMA explains, is the purpose of the law.
