Denver International Airport holiday travel rush begins this week
DENVER (KDVR) — Denver International Airport is already experiencing an increase in travelers ahead of the official national holiday travel period, which begins on Dec. 19 and continues through Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.
AAA of Colorado reported that while airfare is 3% higher, travel is up compared to last year. TSA told FOX31 that agents will screen more than a million people at DIA this season.
FOX31 spoke to travelers excited to spend time with loved ones over the holidays who say being prepared for every step of your trip is the key to avoiding problems.
“It is dealing with the crowds, the hustle and bustle of getting a rental car,” said one airline customer.
Those walking through the main security areas will notice continuing construction on the new east security wing, which is scheduled to open during the third quarter of 2025. Plan to enter the security checkpoint that you are eligible for to avoid delays.
The west security checkpoint features TSA PreCheck screening, TSA PreCheck screening with CLEAR, DEN Reserve, premium access, active duty military access and functional needs access. The hours of operation are 4 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The south security checkpoint features general screening and CLEAR and is open between 3 a.m. and 1 a.m. The south security TSA PreCheck checkpoint located near baggage carousel seven is open from 4 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
TSA is using new high-tech screening which includes credential authentication technology units with digital I.D. scanners and cameras.
DIA’s parking lots and garages are expected to be full during the travel season. DIA spokesperson Michael Konopasek told the Problem Solvers that travelers should check lot availability on the DIA website.
“We stand ready to make sure that we maximize the available spots for people so we’re going to be opening up additional spots out in the shuttle lot areas,” he said.
TSA warned that wrapped gifts may need to be opened during security checks. When it comes to food, the rule is if you can spread it, spill it, pump it or pour it and it’s larger than 3.4 ounces then it should be checked.
The busiest travel days at DIA are expected to be Thursday, Dec. 19, Friday, Dec. 20 and Monday, Dec. 30.
