Driver killed in single-vehicle crash that closed roadway for 7 hours
DENVER (KDVR) — A woman was killed during a single-car crash in Fort Collins on Saturday morning.
Police said an automated 911 call was received at about 5 a.m. from a cell phone that indicated it was involved in a serious vehicle collision. The crashed vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, was found in a natural area on the east side of South College Avenue near Triangle Drive.
Police found the car’s only occupant, an adult female, dead in the driver’s seat. The Fort Collins Police Services Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling team was leading the investigation.
“This is a tragic incident, and our officers remain committed to thoroughly investigating the circumstances of the crash. We are dedicated to identifying the facts so we can provide answers and bring clarity to those impacted,” said Sgt. David Lindsay, of the CRASH team, in a release.
Authorities have since learned that the Pathfinder was traveling south on South College Avenue when it struck the center median, entered the northbound lanes and traveled south in the northbound lane of the roadway.
The car then left the road, collided with a guardrail and impacted a group of trees before it came to rest east of South College Avenue in a ravine. Officers are investigating if excessive speed and alcohol contributed to the crash’s severity.
During the investigation, north and southbound College Avenue was closed between Trillby Road and Carpenter Road for about 7 hours.
Anyone with information about this crash who has not yet spoken to the police is asked to call Officer Phil Morris at 970-221-6540.
The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will determine the deceased’s identity and cause and manner of death. This crash is being investigated separately from an injury shooting at a party on Saturday night in Fort Collins.
