Tesla unveiled its highly anticipated robotaxi at Warner Bros. Studios Thursday night, but fans will have to wait until 2026 to get their hands on one.
CEO Elon Musk arrived at the Burbank studio in one of Tesla’s “Cybercabs,” futuristic, AI-powered vehicles without steering wheels or pedals. He said the company had 21 of the vehicles and a total of 50 autonomous cars on location at the studio.
Musk expressed confidence in the progress Tesla has made with autonomous driving technology.
“We’ll move from supervised Full Self-Driving to unsupervised, where you can fall asleep and wake up at your destination,” Musk said, calling it a “glorious future.”
He estimated the Cybercabs will cost under $30,000 and be available by 2026, though he also hinted at a 2027 release. Musk did not reveal where the vehicles will be manufactured.
Tesla plans to offer the Full Self-Driving system on its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in Texas and California next year.
Seth Goldstein, a strategist at Morningstar Research, noted, “If they’re going to reach robotaxis, they first need to prove the unsupervised FSD works on their current lineup.”
At the event, Tesla also showcased its Optimus humanoid robots alongside a self-driving minibus capable of carrying 20 passengers. Musk said the robots could perform tasks like babysitting and lawn mowing, with a price tag between $28,000 and $30,000.
Despite the unveiling, Tesla faces challenges. U.S. regulators are investigating Full Self-Driving and Autopilot following safety concerns, including a fatal crash involving a Tesla using FSD.
