Everything the Desperate Housewives cast said about rebooting iconic 00s show
Desperate Housewives fans were sent into meltdown after creator Marc Cherry revealed his idea to return to Wisteria Lane for a possible reboot.
The iconic drama aired for eight seasons between 2004 and 2012, with Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman leading the cast in the main roles.
It followed the seemingly-perfect lives of a tight-knit group of Fairview residents as they come to terms with the suicide of a beloved neighbor.
Over the years, Marc has dismissed the thought of returning to the hit show, but threw us all for a loop when he opened up about his ideas for a revival in a new interview, explaining that he would love to focus on the goings-on on the Lane in a different time period.
‘I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade,’ he said. ‘Because the character I miss writing the most is actually Wisteria Lane.
‘That was the most fun playground anyone in the history of television has ever had, because we owned the whole street. I know that street like the back of my hand.
‘It was such a fun place to write for. And there’s times when I go, ‘You know what? I wonder if I could write Wisteria Lane in like, 1966.’
He told People Magazine that there is a ‘part’ of him that would ‘love to go back and do it again’, as he would be ‘better at the job’ now.
‘I did some things right the first season that were intuitive, more than intellectual. And I feel like if I ever got a chance to do that show again, I’d be better at the job. I learned so much,’ he continued.
‘If you do a reboot, you have to have a really good artistic reason to do it. And at some point, I’ll sit down with someone and go, “Okay, let’s talk about if there’s a good enough “why” to do it.”’
With Marc already having the perfect idea in place, here is what the cast have said about possibly coming back for a reboot over the years.
Eva Longoria
Earlier this year, while promoting her hilarious stint in season four of Only Murders in the Building, Eva was questioned on whether she would ever want to reprise her role as Gaby Solis.
Without skipping a beat, she declared: ‘Oh my God, yes! I would be the first to sign up for the reboot.
‘Marc Cherry knows that. I’ve told him a hundred times. I was like, “Let’s do it again. I miss Wisteria Lane. I miss the girls. I miss Gabby Solis. I miss being her.”
Appearing on Loose Women in July, she told the ITV panel: ‘I’d be on Wisteria Lane right now waiting for the crew because I loved my time on that show, I loved all the women. And I miss Gaby, I miss being in her skin.’
Teri Hatcher
During a stint on the same show in 2018, Teri explained that she would definitely be keen to play Susan Delfino again.
‘I’d be the first person [to return]. I never wanted it to be over. I love those characters,’ she said at the time. ‘I think the women would probably all do it.’
However, five years later, the Superman icon told E! News that the hopes of a reunion are thin.
‘I think it’s been a long time. We had amazing fans and I know everyone on that show is really grateful for the journey,’ she said at the time. ‘It was a beautiful place to work up there.
‘The actual Wisteria Lane is probably one of the most amazing sets to get to work on. It’s just at the top of the hill of Universal. It really overlooks the whole city. It’s a gorgeous place to go.’
Felicity Huffman
There is no denying that Lynette Scavo was put through the ringer on Desperate Housewives, and actress Felicity shared that they had ‘used up’ all the plots that could work in the original run.
‘No, there’s no plans to reboot,’ she reflected to Entertainment Tonight in 2018. ‘I think we used up all the narrative there is and I think it’s just going to be a cherished memory. It certainly is for me.’
Marcia Cross
Marcia, who stole our hearts as Bree Van de Kamp across all eight seasons, also agreed that the stories wouldn’t be told in the same way today, as they were previously given a whopping 180 episodes worth of material for the original show.
Unpacking all things Housewives in a chat with the Daily Beast in 2021, she said: ‘I’m very lucky and I’m very grateful for that show and all the wonderful people on it – just the whole thing.
‘We worked non-stop—and what that means is those writers work non-stop. I mean, they mined everything they possibly could … Can you imagine writing that many episodes, eight years’ worth?”
Desperate Housewives is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ now.
