(KRON) — California Toll Operators sent out a warning on Tuesday regarding a “phishing” scam being sent out recently.

The scam involves users getting a text saying they owe a specific amount of toll money. Bay Area residents, including several in the KRON4 newsroom, received texts claiming they owed money to FasTrak.

“California Toll Operators are advising drivers to disregard phishing texts being sent to their phones that detail a specific outstanding toll amount,” California Toll Operators’s warning said. “Toll operators do NOT send text messages to non-accountholders.”

The scam messages include a memo instructing the recipient to pay for “FasTrak Lane” by a certain date to avoid “excessive late fees and potential legal action.”

Below that, the iMessages include a faux link to FasTrak and instructions on how to open it.

Some messages have come from strange numbers that begin with +63, the Philippines’ area code.

If you received this text, California Toll Operators advises filing a complaint with the International Crime Complaint Center. If you are unsure if a text message is a scam, contact your local toll agency.
