Fire hits historic block of Wortley Village with damage estimated at $1M | CBC News
Two people are out of their homes and several business owners will be assessing the damage after an overnight fire in the heart of London’s old south neighbourhood.
The London Fire Department was called to the corner of Wortley Road and Bruce Street at 12:30, said Platoon Chief Brent Shea, a block that has buildings dating back to 1886.
Firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flames, and Shea said it took two aerial rigs and eight crews total to put out the fire. There are a combination of residential and commercial buildings on the corner block.
“All occupants are account for, and no injuries are reported,” said Shea. “The two displaced are in the care of the Red Cross.”
Damage is estimated at more than a million dollars, said Shea.
Wortley Road is expected to remain closed for the rest of Thursday as crews remain on the scene to put out hot spots and investigate the cause.
The London Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
In 2023, another historic building on Wortley Road was destroyed when an arsonist set fire to an outbuilding leaving a hole on the prominent north block of the village.
The owners of the Black Walnut Cafe are promising to rebuild, with permits currently being prepared to start the work.
