Gran, 79, ‘escorted off Jet2 flight for refusing to pay for frozen £9 tuna bap’
A grandmother has claimed she was escorted off a Jet2 flight by armed police after refusing to pay for a tuna roll that was still ‘frozen’ inside.
Lily Ilfield, 79, was heading to Turkey for a birthday trip with her daughter when she ordered a £9 tuna bap.
She said she immediately noticed it was ‘cold’ and ‘soggy’ and, on closer inspection, turned out to still be ‘frozen’ inside.
The pensioner, from Hertfordshire, said she didn’t want to pay for the roll but was told she had to as she had opened the wrapper.
Jet2 claims Lily ‘displayed a catalogue of disruptive behaviour … including the unauthorised consumption of her own alcohol’ that she had bought in duty-free.
She denied bringing her own booze on board, saying she and her daughter bought ‘two wines each’ from cabin staff.
When the flight landed, Lily and her daughter were told to go to the exit while everyone else remained seated.
She told The JVS Show on Three Counties Radio: ‘They called the police. Not one… but four police at the end, at the door.
‘I was in shock, I was saying to people, “I think I’ve been arrested over a sandwich”.
‘The policemen were there with their guns.’
The officers, who quickly let the pair go, ‘were clearly so embarrassed’, Lily added.
She says she complained to the airline but were told their behaviour was ‘unacceptable’ and could land them on an industry-wide blacklist.
A spokesperson for Jet2 added: ‘As a family-friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour, and we make it very clear that customers cannot consume their own alcohol on flights.”
‘We will always support our crew in instances when they are subjected to rude or unpleasant behaviour while prioritising the safety and comfort of all passengers and crew.’
