DETROIT, Michigan: Hyundai is recalling more than 226,000 SUVs and compact cars in the U.S. due to a defect that could cause the rearview camera image to fail, posing a safety risk.

According to documents released on November 27 by U.S. safety regulators, the recall affects certain 2021 and 2022 Santa Fe SUVs and Elantra sedans.

The issue stems from solder joints on a printed circuit board, which can develop cracks over time. These cracks may lead to rearview cameras failing to display an image, reducing visibility for drivers and increasing the risk of accidents, particularly involving pedestrians.

To address the problem, Hyundai dealerships will replace the faulty cameras free of charge. Vehicle owners affected by the recall will begin receiving notification letters starting January 19, 2024.
