An FIR was filed in Meghalaya against social media influencer Akash Sagar after a video of him and two companions chanting religious slogans at a church went viral. The incident gained attention when Sagar, who has over 1.5 million Instagram followers, posted the video, sparking outrage. The video shows Akash entering the Church of Epiphany in Mawlynnong, located in the East Khasi Hills district, where he and his companions engaged in actions that were seen as disrespecting the sanctity of the church.

According to the complaint, Akash chanted religious slogans, including “Jai Shri Ram,” while inside the church. In the video, he and his companions entered the altar area, shouted slogans, and altered Christian hymns, further intensifying concerns over the desecration of the religious site. The incident has triggered a legal response and raised questions about the misuse of religious spaces for social media content.

After the incident, Shillong-based activist filed a police complaint at Laitumkhrah Police Station, denouncing the act as premeditated and deliberate. The activist claimed that the influencer’s actions were aimed not only at insulting the Christian faith but also at provoking communal tension in a region known for its religious diversity and harmony.

After a complaint was filed, the Meghalaya Police registered an FIR against Akash Sagar and his companions on charges of trespassing, disrupting public harmony, and insulting religious beliefs.

In response, Akash posted on social media, dismissing the allegations and questioning the complaint’s basis, saying, “For saying Jai Shree Ram?” before deleting the post. He also shared news article screenshots about the FIR and accused his critics of being “traitors.” Akash attempted to justify his actions by citing a Karnataka High Court ruling in a separate case, which had dismissed charges against individuals accused of shouting religious slogans inside a mosque.

Several users commented on his post on Instagram. The comments were, “Being a Hindu, I apologize. Jai Shree Ram and Amen. Merry Christmas 🤶 to all my Christian friends.”, “Jai shree ram. But this not cool👎🏼” and more.
