IRVINE Welsh has shared his take on the result of the US presidential election, claiming that “fascism” is now taking a grip of the world.

The outspoken author, 66, posted to social media yesterday before Donald Trump’s victory was made official, but as the result was becoming ever clearer.

Welsh previously admitted a strong dislike for either candidate, and shared his belief that the 2024 election would be the last in the US “for some time”.

His latest post has not been well received though, and attracted a slew of responses from fed-up social media users.

Many were quick to slam him for his overuse of the term “facism”, claiming he does not understand what it actually means.

He previously used it to describe the direction he believed Britain would be heading in following the general election in July.

Airing his thoughts yesterday morning, he wrote: “Saw this one coming a mile away but it still feels s**t watching fascism take a grip of the world.”

The post has since received over 11,000 likes and more than 870 comments equally as vocal in nature.

One said: “It’s funny a multi-millionaire that makes his money from portraying his fellow countrymen as drug addicts is completely disconnected from reality.”

A second commented: “Like a woke university student, Welsh has chronic TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) and doesn’t understand what fascism is.

“As one of my top three favourite authors, this is as disappointing as watching [Robert] De Niro’s decline into emotional incontinence.”

Another agreed: “Funny how ‘fascism’ has become the go-to term for ‘any result I don’t like.’

“If you’re going to throw the word around, at least know what it actually means. Hint: it’s not just people voting differently from you.

“But hey, keep up the theatrics if it makes you feel better.”

A fourth wrote: “Another woke libtard (sic) who I sadly liked at one time in my life. Now off you trot, silly little man.”

Another added: “Don’t let yourself down by talking s***e.”
