Jerod Mayo unsure if Brian Belichick will follow Bill Belichick to UNC
There’s still no word on if the Patriots will be losing safeties coach Brian Belichick to the University of North Carolina after his dad, Bill Belichick, was hired as the Tar Heels’ head coach.
Head coach Jerod Mayo said Monday that he hasn’t spoken to the younger Belichick about his future.
“No, we haven’t talked about that at all,” Mayo said Monday morning on WEEI. “And he’s been 100% on the opponent, which was Arizona this past week.”
Brian Belichick said Thursday that he was focused on the Cardinals when asked about his future.
The Patriots did lose former wide receivers coach, Ross Douglas, to Syracuse during the end of the 2023 season, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a member of the staff to leave now.
The only member of his new coaching staff that Bill Belichick has announced is Freddie Kitchens, who is UNC’s current interim head coach. The former Browns head coach and Giants offensive assistant previously served as tight ends coach & run game coordinator of UNC.
Mayo was asked if he was surprised that Bill Belichick landed at UNC.
“I know he’s a great coach, and he needs to be coaching, and I’m happy for him,” Mayo said on WEEI.
