Men jailed after ‘vicious’ stabbing outside coffee shop left man in hospital
Damien Lee and George Horsted had a spat with a 22-year-old man inside a restaurant near Goring Road in Worthing, which then spilled out into the street.
Emergency services were called when the spat continued outside a nearby coffee shop, and armed police locked down the area.
The 22-year-old, from Worthing, was found with facial injuries while a 30-year-old man from London was found with what appeared to be a stab wound.
He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and was later discharged.
Following the incident at around 6pm on Sunday, March 24, Horsted, 26, and Lee, 28, both of The Quadrant in Worthing, were arrested on April 2 and 3 respectively.
They were later charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife in a public place.
A 13-day trial ensued at Lewes Crown Court.
A jury found them not guilty of section 18 wounding with intent but guilty of a lesser section 20 offence of unlawful wounding and possession of a bladed article.
Horsted also pleaded guilty to a second count of section 20 unlawful wounding.
A section 18 offence means the defendant intended to wound or commit really serious harm, while a section 20 offence means they only intended to commit a lesser level of harm.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “This was a vicious attack where both Horsted and Lee caused serious injuries following an altercation.
“The sentence they received should serve as a deterrent to those thinking about carrying and using bladed articles in public.
“Officers were quickly on scene, a swift investigation was launched and they were both put before the courts quickly.”
