Northwest Indiana school bus driver arrested for OWI with 32 students aboard
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – A school bus driver in Northwest Indiana has been arrested for operating while intoxicated with 32 students on board her bus.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office said on Sept. 20, 38-year-old Kayla Pier was driving for the La Porte Community School Corporation and was assigned to drive a school bus that day from La Porte Middle School to Riley Elementary School with 32 students on board. During the route, students on the bus noticed Pier was acting and driving erratically.
School district officials immediately went to Riley Elementary School, intercepted the bus and removed Pier. She resigned from the school district later that same day, according to investigators.
An investigation was launched and culminated with a probable cause affidavit and an arrest warrant issued for Pier.
Pier turned herself in on Friday and was booked into the La Porte County Jail. She was charged with operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent.
Pier was later released on bond, according to officials.
