The St. Thomas Police Service has charged a man with second degree murder following the death of his brother on Thursday.

At around 7:20 p.m. that night, 59-year-old St. Thomas resident Michael Mitchell went to London police headquarters requesting a well-being check on his 60-year-old brother, Jeffrey Mitchell, also of St. Thomas. Some type of unspecified incident had taken place between the two earlier in the day, police said.

Police don’t know why the younger brother went to London, said St. Thomas police spokesperson Samantha Wakefield.

“The details and those questions are still under investigation as we look to find those answers,” she said.

The older brother, Jeffrey Mitchell, was found dead in his home by police. Michael Mitchell was arrested and taken to St. Thomas police headquarters and charged.

“There’s no need for the public to be concerned in any capacity,” Wakefield said. “This is an isolated incident.”

Jeffrey Mitchell was known as a “happy guy” by his neighbour Holly MacQuarrie, who said he was “always the loudest in the room and very jokey”.

“I don’t have a better word,” MacQuarrie told CBC News. “I’m in shock that such a terrible thing happened to such a kind friend. I’m sorry to his family for the pain and anger that I’m sure they are now experiencing. May Jeff rest in the sweetest peace.”

Residents can expect to see a police presence in the area of Highview Drive in the city’s east end as investigators continue their work.

Michael Mitchell remains in police custody and is expected to make a court appearance on Friday.
