Tata Group Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital reportedly in a critical condition. The news came as a shock to many as he had confirmed his well being two days ago.

As the nation mourns the passing of the titan, we are taking a look at the moral compass Tata carried with him. This enabled him to live a blot-free life and made him the beloved businessman we all knew.

In a 2010 interview with NDTV, Tata shared an instance where he was being instigated to indulge in corruption for the sake of Tata airlines. He had revealed about receiving an advice of paying Rs 15 crore to a minister for a business deal.

“A fellow industrialist, sitting next to me said, ‘why don’t you pay the minister? You know he wants Rs 15 crore. You people want the airline don’t you?” Tata said.

Upon being asked by the industrialist ‘how do you avoid corruption?’ he answered, “It has to be self regulated. You will never understand. We don’t do that.”

“He said ‘you’re stupid. No, I want to go to bed at night feeling that I have not done it,” he further revealed.

Ratan Tata took the reigns of the Tata Group as the Chairman in 1991 and retired in 2012. In 2008, he introduced the Tata Nano with the aim of making world’s most affordable car. In the same year, he was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award for his contributions.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde has declared a day of mourning for the titan. His last rites will be completed today at Worli crematorium.
