Residents “devastated” after man dies in Bishop Auckland
The man in his 20s, who has been named locally as Craig York, had been seriously injured in the early hours of Saturday morning and despite the best efforts of emergency services he was declared dead at the scene.
Two men and two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of murder and they have been taken into custody.
A woman has also been arrested for assisting an offender.
Tributes have been pouring in from friends and residents in the area.
Nathan Parker, a friend of Craig who lives on the same street, described how it was the “scariest thing that had ever happened to him”.
He said: “It’s scary. Craig is gone far too soon.
“I wish I had heard something on the night and that I could have helped him.
“It’s the scariest thing that has happened to me – you’d never think it could happen here.”
She said: “It was a big shock for me.
“He was always lovely to us and said hello whenever we saw him.
“I only spoke to him the other day, it’s just devastating news.
“It’s getting worse here, this street is nice but the area is getting worse.”
A Durham Police spokesperson previously said: “Police were called to reports of a disturbance in Eldon Lane, just before 3am this morning (December 14).
“A man in his 20s had been seriously injured and despite the best efforts of paramedics, was sadly declared dead at the scene.
