North Yorkshire Police summonsed Robert John Lockwood, 70, of south York, to attend York Magistrates’ Court.

The two complainants, both men, are younger than him.

Lockwood appeared in court walking with a stick and lawyers for the prosecution and defence spoke loudly to ensure that he could follow proceedings.

Lockwood denied two charges of assault, both allegedly committed in the complex on May 19.

His trial will take place on March 26 next year, when prosecution and defence are expected to call witnesses to the incident that led to Lockwood being charged.

Police had given Lockwood bail conditions that he does not contact the two complainants and a prosecution witness, all of whom live in the sheltered housing complex.

Magistrates released Lockwood on the same bail conditions until the trial.
