Ski industry eyes Colorado's warm temperatures as ski season approaches
DENVER (KDVR) — With October officially here, warm temperatures have Colorado ski areas holding off on snow-making operations.
Over at Loveland Ski Area, the parking lot is filled with gear for the season. Snow-making machines stand at-the-ready on the mountain. The area saw three inches of snow on Sept. 21, but record-setting heat quickly melted it.
“Conditions, right now, are gorgeous, if you’re goin’ on a hike,” said Loveland Ski Area Spokesperson Dustin Schaefer. “But it’s not what our snowmakers want with snowmaking.”
Down Interstate 70 in Idaho Springs at “Exit 240 Ski & Ride,” co-owner Bart Gothman said that ordinarily, early October is tune-up time for skiers and snowboarders who are preparing for the winter sports season.
“Yeah, we’re getting a little nervous,” said Gothman, who co-owns the shop with his wife.
Last year, Loveland Ski Area opened on Nov. 10. To monitor snowmaking progress, Schaefer suggests visiting SkiLoveland.com/Snowmaking.
