The incident happened between 11 p.m. and midnight on Thursday, March 14, on Hawthorn Gardens.
Today, as part of their enquiries, Northumbria Police are appealing to the public for information.
An unknown offender reportedly approached the victim, pushed him to the ground, and struck him on the back of the head.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains nearly nine months on, receiving care for his significant injuries.

Police were alerted to the assault after concerns were raised by hospital staff.
They are particularly keen to speak to a woman who is believed to have helped the victim return home after the attack.
Anyone with information, no matter how small, is urged to come forward.
