US Capitol Police arrest Illinois man for allegedly assaulting South Carolina lawmaker
WASHINGTON (DC News Now/WGN) — The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) arrested an Illinois man who allegedly assaulted a U.S. Representative Tuesday evening.
USCP said the alleged assault happened just before 6 p.m., when the Member of Congress’ office reported a situation that happened in the Rayburn House Office Building.
House Division officers and agents from the Threat Assessment Section found the suspect accused of assaulting Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.)
Officers conducted an investigative interview and arrested 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois.
USCP said he is facing an Assaulting a Government Official charge.
At the time of the assault, the Rayburn House Office building was open to the public and McIntyre was allowed into the building after going through security screening prior to entering the Congressional buildings.
Mace posted on X that she was “physically accosted” because she was trying to “fight to protect women.”
“All the violence and threats keep proving our point. Women deserve to be safe. Your threats will not stop my fight for women!” Mace stated in her post.
