'We're giving away $2.2 million': Trustee walks out ahead of Henyard's 100% homeowner tax refund proposal
SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WGN) — A Thornton Township Board of Trustees meeting was again cut short Wednesday night, but not before Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard and the board she’s battling got some business done.
“No one can run circles around me when it come to public service,” henyard said.
Two present trustees and Henyard agreed to pay township bills and cover employees’ insurance, but another showdown ensued when Trustee Chris Gonzalez moved to cut the meeting short.
“I’d like to make a motion to adjourn the meeting,” Gonzalez said.
“Why did you come to the meeting if you didn’t want to handle the business?” Henyard said. “Why? Stop playing these games.”
Gonzalez left, which meant for the third time in a row, there was no quorum for the meeting and it was over, minutes after it started.
“The business got done,” Gonzalez said. “The bills were paid. The employees will have insurance.”
The next items on the agenda are employee bonuses and a 100% tax refund for all homeowners.
“We’re giving away $2.2 million to the residents of Thornton Township,” Henyard said.
Gonzalez said Henyard has shared little about the giveaway, and that’s why he walked out.
“Not word one. It says 100%,” Gonzalez said. “Well, 100% of what? 100% to who? That could mean a lot of different things. What’s the administrative cost? When’s it going to start? When’s it going to end? Literally, [Henyard’s said] nothing.”
As Henyard battles her board, she’s also fighting eviction.
She and her boyfriend are accused of not paying rent. Her landlord, Genetta Hull, confirmed to WGN News these papers served to Henyard at the start of her meeting are evictions summons and complaints.
The landlord told WGN Investigates last week she can’t afford for Henyard not to pay.
“I think in her mind, she feels like she’s untouchable, and that’s a problem,” Hull said.
