Students at Churchill High School in Winnipeg were kept inside their classrooms while police responded to a firearm call that turned out to be false on Tuesday.

Winnipeg Police Service patrol officers and a tactical team were called to the high school following a report of someone armed with a firearm, Const. Pat Saydak said in a statement.

They determined no firearm was involved and no shots were fired, he said, adding there were no injuries.

Officers were speaking with the student, he added.

In a letter to parents of Churchill students, acting principal Georgia Wells said a student “was having a difficult time in the halls today” and “the school was placed in a lockdown to ensure everyone’s safety” as a result.

Staff and students were safe at all times, Wells said, and guidance counsellors are available to staff and students.
