Workers resume bargaining with Western University 6 weeks into strike | CBC News
Western University’s administration and the union representing striking facilities employees have resumed talks after a stalemate that’s lasted six weeks.
Chris Yates, vice-president of CUPE Local 2361, and a spokesperson from the university confirmed both parties got back to the table on Tuesday, with bargaining continuing on Wednesday.
A total of 330 employees responsible for taking care of the grounds and buildings walked off the job Aug. 30 calling for wage parity with other unionized workers doing similar roles.
Western University brought in replacement workers immediately, sometimes referred to as “scabs” by those in the labour movement. Ontario, unlike British Columbia and Quebec, does not have laws preventing employers from doing so.
The university has also closed through access to vehicles across campus, blocking the entrance on the Richmond Street side, citing safety concerns.
A picketer was hit on Western Road in September with motorists travelling in the area facing ongoing delays due to the closure.
